_____________________________________________________________

16 Temple DE Muhammad Wilkerson — Good pass rusher fills immediate need at five technique.

50 Indiana WR Tandon Doss — Intriguing receiver/return prospect, but really a third-round talent.

61 Florida OT Marcus Gilbert — Power blocker; Good addition for team with a right tackle hole.

82 LSU ILB Kelvin Sheppard — Bolts get a pretty solid prospect at a position of glaring weakness.

183 Georgia ILB Akeem Dent — Another inside linebacker to pair with third-rounder Sheppard.

201 Ohio State LB Brian Rolle — Smallish Rolle projects only as special teams help in San Diego.

234 South Carolina WR Tori Gurley — Surprise early entrant probably won’t make 53-man roster.

Jumping two spots for Wilkerson cost San Diego its third- and seventh-round picks.  G.M. A.J. Smith was apparently worried the Patriots would draft him.  Here’s guessing they wouldn’t have.  The Chargers knew their needs, and essentially addressed them in order.  Gilbert and Wilkerson give them impressive size in the trenches, and it’s not crazy to think Sheppard and Dent could both play major year-one roles.  Doss has serious play-making ability once he gets healthy.  Overall, this was a solid if unspectacular draft.  They get dinged a bit for the first-round trade up. have potential to start down the road.
